Agentforce Specialist certification: what replaced AI Associate

Codemithra Team

Codemithra Team

No. Salesforce retired the AI Associate certification on 2 February 2026. No one can book or sit it now. If you must choose what to study today, Salesforce points you toward two different things instead.

One is free Agentblazer Status trails. The other is the paid Agentforce Specialist certification exam. Choose the trails for a free skills check, or the exam for a certification that shows on your Trailblazer profile. Checked against the official Salesforce Help retirement notice on 8 September 2026.

The confusion is fair. Salesforce has used three different names in its AI messaging over the past year: AI Associate, Agentblazer Status and Agentforce Specialist. Only one of those names still leads to a certification you can sit today. This article separates the three, in plain terms, so you stop planning around a retired exam.

What actually happened to AI Associate

Salesforce's own retirement notice repeats that exact date and gives the practical dates behind it. The last day to sit the exam was 1 May 2025. Registration for new attempts closed earlier, on 31 March 2025. Both deadlines used 11:59pm MST as the cutoff. Read the notice.

That gap matters for how you read older content. Anything written about AI Associate after March 2025 was already describing a certification that new candidates could no longer join. It did not formally retire for almost another year.

What retirement means depends on whether you already held it. If you passed AI Associate before the cutoff, your Trailblazer profile now shows the certification as Retired. It also drops off Salesforce's public Certification Verification page. If you never sat the exam, there is no path back in. Salesforce is not offering a way to register for a retired exam. Do not treat any study guide written for it as current.

The two things Salesforce says to do instead

The same retirement notice names exactly two replacements. They are not interchangeable. One is free skills recognition. The other is a formal, paid certification.

Agentblazer Status is a Trailhead-based recognition program with three tiers for 2026: Champion, Innovator and Legend, according to the Agentblazer Status page. Champion covers foundational AI and Agentforce concepts. Innovator moves into applying Agentforce to a business outcome. You earn both by completing Trailhead trails, with no exam involved. Both also need renewing every year by completing that year's trails.

Agentforce Specialist certification is different in kind, not just in name. Salesforce's own announcement calls Legend its first status to include an actual certification, earned through a proctored, multiple-choice exam. See the announcement. That proctored exam is the Agentforce Specialist exam. Passing it, on top of completing the Innovator trail, gives you Legend status.

This distinction matters. Champion and Innovator are free and exam-free. Legend is the only tier that includes an actual certification. Reaching it requires passing a paid exam.

The retirement notice also flags a smaller point for anyone working inside a Salesforce partner organisation. Agentblazer Status does not count toward a Partner Navigator Score. The Agentforce Specialist certification does count toward Agentforce Navigator distinctions.

From AI Associate to Legend. AI Associate: retired 2 Feb 2026, no longer bookable Then Champion trail: free, no exam, core AI concepts Then Innovator trail: free, no exam, applied Agentforce use Then Choose a path: free status only, or a paid exam Then Specialist exam: paid, proctored, 60 questions Then Legend status: only status tier with a real certification
The current path Salesforce describes after AI Associate's retirement, based on the retirement notice and the Agentblazer Status page.

The Agentforce Specialist exam, in plain terms

A Certified Agentforce Specialist builds and customises AI agents. The role covers designing AI workflows around prompts, actions, data and automation. It also covers making an agent more reliable once it is live, per the Trailhead credential page.

There is no prerequisite certification to sit the exam. Salesforce delivers it either online with a proctor, or at a physical testing centre, confirmed on Salesforce's own announcement blog. Industry exam-prep guides put the format at around 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. They list a 105-minute time limit and a 73% passing score.

Content splits roughly across AI Agents, Prompt Engineering, Data Cloud for Agentforce, the development lifecycle and multi-agent interoperability. Salesforce's own exam guide page did not render as readable text during this review. Treat those figures as a planning estimate, and confirm current numbers on the live Trailhead credential page before you book.

On pricing, be careful with older posts. At launch, Salesforce's own Agentblazer Status announcement made the first attempt free through the end of 2025. That window has closed. An industry guide dated January 2026, and updated in April 2026, lists current pricing.

It states $200 for a first attempt and $100 for a retake. It does not mention any active free offer. If a page still describes the exam as free, that offer has ended.

AI Associate vs Agentblazer vs Specialist. AI Associate (retired): Retired 2 Feb 2026. Last exam sat 1 May 2025. No longer bookable, badge shows Retired.. Champion and Innovator status: Free Trailhead trails, no exam, renew each year, do not count toward Partner Navigator Score.. Agentforce Specialist certification: Paid, proctored exam, about 60 questions in 105 minutes. Passing it unlocks Legend status and counts toward Agentforce Navigator distinctions.
How the three names compare today. Figures on exam length and pricing come from a January to April 2026 industry guide. They are not a direct quote from Salesforce's own exam guide text.

One credential sometimes mentioned alongside this change is the Data Cloud Consultant certification. Salesforce describes it as a professional certification. It suits people with experience implementing and consulting on enterprise data platforms, in a customer-facing role. Salesforce's own post positions it as a companion credential to Agentforce Specialist, for more experienced consultants. It is not a replacement for AI Associate. If you followed the AI Associate track as a beginner, this is not the credential to try next.

Which path fits you

Say a free way to show current AI and Agentforce literacy is your goal, and a certification is not. Complete the Champion and Innovator trails on Trailhead. Both are free, need no exam, and give you a recognised status on your Trailblazer profile.

Say instead you need something that reads as a real certification. Common reasons are a resume, a Trailblazer profile, or a Partner Navigator Score at a partner organisation. The Champion and Innovator trails alone will not get you there. You need to pass the paid, proctored Agentforce Specialist exam. Passing it also qualifies you for Legend status.

A practical exercise you can do today

Sign up for a free Trailhead account if you do not already have one. Open the Agentforce Specialist credential page and find its exam guide's list of objectives. Go through that list module by module. For each objective, note whether you can already do the matching task in a free Salesforce Developer Edition org.

An example task is to build a basic agent action or write a prompt template. Where you cannot, that gap becomes your study list. This list comes from the current exam's own objectives, not from a retired AI Associate guide.

Where Ethnus fits

Self-study on Trailhead can feel thin on structure. The course page for the Ethnus Codemithra Salesforce Developer course describes it as authorised by Salesforce. It runs across 15 sections and 84 lessons, over about 200 hours. Named topics include Platform Development Basics, Data Modelling and Apex Basics and Database. Later modules add Visualforce Basics, Lightning Web Components and Mobile SDK development.

It includes industry-relevant projects and trainer-led sessions alongside the syllabus. That way, Apex and Flow concepts get practised with feedback, not just read about. Agentforce Specialist content is not a named module in that syllabus today. Treat the course as the platform foundation to build before you attempt the exam, not as a direct exam-prep track.

For a lower-commitment first step, Ethnus also runs a free Salesforce Discovery Day. It is an online event where you earn a set of Trailhead badges and a certificate of participation. Use it to try Trailhead before deciding whether the full course suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still register for the AI Associate exam?

No. Registration closed on 31 March 2025. The last exam was sat on 1 May 2025, and the certification formally retired on 2 February 2026. There is no current path to register for it.

Does my existing AI Associate certification disappear?

It stays on record, but shows as Retired on your Trailblazer profile. It no longer appears on Salesforce's public Certification Verification page.

Is Agentblazer Status the same as a certification?

No. Champion and Innovator are free Trailhead-trail recognitions with no exam. Only Legend status includes an actual Salesforce certification, earned by passing the proctored Agentforce Specialist exam.

Is the Agentforce Specialist exam still free?

Not currently. Salesforce made the first attempt free only through the end of 2025. Guides from early to mid-2026 list standard pricing of $200 for a first attempt and $100 for a retake.

Does Data Cloud Consultant replace AI Associate?

No. Salesforce positions Data Cloud Consultant as a professional-level companion credential for experienced data-platform consultants. It is not a beginner-level substitute for AI Associate.

Start with the Codemithra Salesforce Developer course if Apex, Flow or Data Cloud basics feel unfamiliar. Then map the current Agentforce Specialist objectives against what you can already build.
